A virtual world created in the great mind of James Cameron and brought to life with over $400 million of computer work is the setting of this sci-fi epic. It recounts the tale of paraplegic veteran Jake Sully, who finds himself stepping into his brother's position by entering the Avatar program in exchange for the surgery to restore his legs. He must now control the body of what appears to be a native inhabitant of Jupiter's moon Pandora, however, the research team that he works under and the military commander he reports to have different agendas. He must choose between helping the company by getting the natives to move so that the precious metal under their home can be mined, gathering intel on how to destroy them for the military, or abandoning his race for that of the seemingly primitive Na'vi as his undercover mission entrenches him more each day in their spiritual lifestyle.
The vast amount of work put into the making of this movie paid off immensely, which can be seen in the peak level of realism of the entirely computer generated scenary. The storyline will appeal to you if you are interested in sci-fi (clearly), epic music, a romantic back story, and a fair amount of action. The acting was as good as you could expect given that there really wasn't any due to the fact that all of the actors essentially had their faces filmed to achive the real expressions, which were then added to the computer modelling. The voice acting, on the other hand, was quite well done and you could clearly pick up on the personalities of the characters from their speech. We definitely recommend seeing it in 3D though, it is worth the extra $3, but word has it that it is quite amazing even in 2D. |
